How Does Cold Therapy Work –
and When Is It the Right Choice?
How Does Cold Therapy Work?
Cold constricts the blood vessels in the affected area, slows tissue metabolism, and reduces the transmission of pain signals. The result: less swelling, less pain without medication.
Cold vs. Heat Therapy
Heat promotes circulation ideal for chronic muscle tension. However, heat can increase swelling in acute injuries or freshly operated joints. Cold therapy helps reduce the inflammatory response right where it occurs.
The rule of thumb: For sprains, bruises, strains, and post-operative swelling, cool the affected area first. Combining cooling + compression further accelerates the removal of swelling fluid making it more effective than cooling alone.
Reduce Swelling
Cold inhibits inflammatory responses in the tissue immediately after trauma
Relieve Pain
Slower nerve conduction provides noticeable pain relief without medication
Recover Faster
Early mobilization after surgery or injury is supported by targeted reduction of swelling
Recover Safely at Home
After knee or ankle surgery, reliable cold therapy is essential hassle-free, without external devices, and easy to use at home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Lumark cold therapy at a glance.
Cold therapy also medically known as cryotherapy is the targeted use of cold to relieve pain and support recovery. Cold constricts the blood vessels in the affected area, inhibits inflammatory responses, reduces swelling, and slows nerve conduction of pain signals. The result: less pain, less swelling without medication.
The Lumark System is designed for two main target groups: athletes and sports clubs that need to respond immediately to acute injuries such as sprains, bruises, or strains and patients who need reliable cold and compression therapy at home after knee or ankle surgery.
The RICE protocol is the established first-aid approach for acute sports injuries: Rest (stop activity), Ice (cooling), Compression (pressure), Elevation. The Lumark cooling compress combines two of these steps in one: it specifically cools the affected area while simultaneously applying individually adjustable compression. It is therefore an ideal immediate measure for athletes who need to respond quickly and easily without ice cubes, wet towels, or separate bandages.
Cold therapy is the right choice for acute injuries, fresh swelling, and post-operative discomfort it constricts blood vessels and inhibits inflammation. Heat therapy, on the other hand, promotes circulation and is suitable for chronic muscle tension and stiffness. Heat applied to acute swelling can even increase inflammation. Rule of thumb: Acute → cold. Chronic/tight → heat.
Cooling reduces post-operative swelling and pain without medication. Compression additionally supports the removal of swelling fluid and stabilizes the joint. The Lumark System is CE-certified (CE medical device) as a medical device and specifically designed for post-operative care of the knee and ankle easy to use at home, without external devices or electricity.
The Lumark System consists of an anatomically shaped compress, integrated cooling gel packs, and a manual hand pump. Cool the packs for at least 2 hours, insert them into the compress, apply the compress, and use the hand pump to build up the desired compression pressure. No external devices, no electricity simply cool, apply, and adjust the pressure.
The Lumark cooling compress is suitable for sprains, bruises, strains, and overuse injuries as well as post-operative care of the knee and ankle. Cold therapy must not be used on open wounds, in cases of cold sensitivity, circulation disorders, or impaired skin sensation. When in doubt, always seek medical advice.
Cycles of 20 minutes of cooling followed by a 10-minute break are recommended. This cycle can be repeated several times a day. During the post-operative phase or in cases of acute injury, the frequency of use should be discussed with the treating physician or physiotherapist.
Compression enhances the effects of cold therapy in several ways: it actively promotes the removal of swelling fluid from the tissue, ensures more even skin contact with the cooling pack, and stabilizes the affected joint. The combination of cooling + compression as provided for in the RICE protocol is demonstrably more effective than cooling alone.
Yes. The Lumark Cooling & Compression System bears the CE marking (CE medical device) and is classified as a medical device (MD). It meets the applicable Thai FDA as well as the European and USA requirements for medical devices and was developed according to international standards.
Cold therapy is not suitable for: open wounds or skin injuries, known cold sensitivity or cold allergy, circulation disorders, or directly on skin with impaired sensation. For post-operative use, always consult the treating physician. If in doubt, seek medical advice before use.
Both the compress and cooling packs are designed for unlimited, repeated use. Simply cool the packs again after each use. The compress can be cleaned with a damp cloth as needed. There is no specified maximum number of applications the system is designed for long-term use.
